When I think of Detroit, I think of a thousand opportunities. I see glimpses of where Detroit has been, based on what’s left and what I’ve read of its history. And, as I look around, I can see what it is now. But it takes hope to see where it will be.

As I reflect on the happenings of the past several weeks, I think about the recent passing of my brother. I take a walk in the rain to hide the tears. Some might say that there is not much to be hopeful for. I would be the first to disagree.

I grew up thinking I had hope. I lived in a Christian home, but also lived with selfish desires and aspirations -- I wanted comfort, success, and happiness. I didn’t think much at all about the poor, hurting, or lost. I thought I had hope, but I didn’t have plans to share any of it.

I work for one of the Big Three automakers. I’m not from Detroit, but it’s in my blood now. For better or worse, my future rides with the future of the city. Most people think this should worry me -- but I’m sleeping easy. Why? Because good things are here. People are here. God is here. Love is here. Hope is here.

I grew up in a small country side town and nothing usually exciting happened there. We lived in a simple area, where farmlands flourished and Amish folks were abundant. There was no obvious crime and you never saw people on the side of the street asking for a buck or a meal. Hope didn't mean much to me because I had never seen a need a for it.
